Caledonian Cup

Game 1: Sparta Jag vs Complex

Sparta took to the field having just witnessed THW and Dot Net draw the opening game 0-0. This was a great incentive for the Jags and they set about their work well. A couple of early chance for both Ryan and Sonn soon turned into a goal when Andy Mac burst down the left hand side and played the ball into Ryan for his first of the day. An incident involving Sparta forward Sonn and the Complex right back resulted in the two seeing a two minute sin-bin. Sonn then burst back into the game by running with the ball to the by-line and eventually whipping in a cross for Ryan to head home. The game quietened down for a shor period until a fine move involving T, Fergie and Ryan resulted in Sparta's 3rd courtesy of Steven Thomas. Complex scored a scrappy late goal but never looked liked troubling the ever-eccentric Roo in the Sparta goal.

Game 2: Sparta Jag vs THW

The way the fixtures worked out Sparta played two games in a row and this was the best thing that could of happened for the would-be champions. Sparta turned on the style against THW, within a couple of minutes Sonn shaved the post with a curling effort after some great work from Ryan. It wasn't long before Sparta's top scorer opened his account for the day, a long mazy run for co-striker Ryan resulted in an easy tap-in for Sonn. Sonn's second was delivered brilliantly by Gurdy, the striker beat the offside trap and lobbed the keeper and defender to head into an empty net. Then something special was witnessed by all. After a clearance from a corner by Pete Sonn found himself 35 yards from goal and unleashed a right footed strike over the into the top corner to complete his hat-trick. Next to get in on the scoring was Andy Mac. Fergie played a delightful 60 yard pass into McIntyre's path and after one touch the big midfielder lashed the ball into the bottom corner leaving the THW keeper helpless.

Game 3: Sparta Jag vs Dot Net

This fixture is always a wee bit feisty but with Kirkwood resting McIntyre, Sonn, Pete and Fergie, Sparta seemed to make a slow start. Soon Gavin, making his comeback after injury, received the ball at the edge of the box from T and drove the ball low into the bottom corner. Sparta sat back after that and almost paid the price with Dot Net winning many corners. It's never nice to play against a team with 6 at the back but the defensive Dot Net seemed happy to try and use ex-Sparta player Paddy Kelly as their only means of attack. Sparta held on to their slender lead and this result set up and interesting league table going into the final game. Sparta had won every game so they were in the final with 9 points. However the other 3 teams had drawn their matches and this meant that the winner of the final game, Complex v THW, would meet Sparta in the final but a draw would mean Dot Net sneaking through on goal difference.

Final: Sparta Jag vs Dot Net

As you may have guessed the final group match was an enthralling 0-0 draw and Dot Net went through to meet Sparta in the final. With a full strength squad at his disposal, Kirkwood decided to stick with the team that started the day:

Roo
T Stevie Pete James
Fergie Tommo Marcus Andy Mac
Sonn Ryan

A cagey start from both teams left many feeling that one moment of magic or one mistake would settle this fixture. And then we saw some magic. Fergie chased a lost cause down the line and laid it back to T who controlled the ball with the underside of his boot and let fly with a goal that was fit to win the World Cup. A cool Taylor was mobbed by his team-mates as the reality sunk in that this was going to be Sparta's day. The game progressed and as Ryan chased a long ball over the top he managed to head the ball over the Dot Net keeper but was adjudged to have pushed the defender. Then another fantastic ball from Ferguson found the defender the wrong side of Sonn but the 26-goal striker couldn't hit the target this time. The ref blew his whistle for the final time that day and Sparta had won the Caledonian Cup. Tournament sponsor Andrew MacIntyre Snr arrived to present the Cup to triumphant Sparta captain Stevie and the boys sprayed the champagne in celebration.

A good day for all and a tournament played in good spirit.
