Fir Park Corner vs Sparta Jag
Sparta had to bounce back from a terrible result in Aberdeen the previous
weekend and were desperate to get back to winning ways. Motherwell were the
next fixture on the calendar for the Sparta Jag team.
It was a hard grass park in Hamilton the venue for this match, Thistle had a
full squad to choose from, a couple of the regulars had been dropped to the
bench as punishment for the week before's performance.
Thistle got the game underway and straight away you can tell they were out to
punish Motherwell, Sparta had a few early efforts on goal but nothing too
troublesome for the 'Well keeper. The opener wasn't long in coming, a long
throw in from Gordy into the Well penalty area caused confusion within the Well
defence; a flick on at the near post from Sparta Striker David Anderson was
turned into the Motherwell net from one of their unfortunate defenders. Sparta
were up for this game and needed goals to compensate for the Aberdeen result,
the second goal then followed shortly after, this came courtesy of in-form
striker Ryan O'Donnell who did well to nick in to double the Jags lead.
Thistle were looking good for the win and just needed to score more goals.
The third then followed - David Anderson broke the offside trap and buried the
ball in the back of the net with 20 minutes played, Ryan then grabbed his
second of the game when a shot from James Taylor was flicked goalward bound by
Ryan and sent the Motherwell keeper the wrong way to make it four. Thistle
made a couple of substitutions and this didn't take long to pay off, a corner
whipped to the back post by Andy McIntyre was headed into the top corner by
Ross Ferguson. Andy McIntyre swept another ball into the area and a great
diving header from David Anderson made the score six without reply. Thistle
were cruising like a barge down the Forth and Clyde canal. The half drew to a
close shortly after the sixth was scored.

Thistle made a few more changes to freshen things up, with the introduction of
Stephen Thomas into the centre midfield who had been missing for Sparta for a
while. Thistle were still looking for more goals and didn't take long to do
just that, a lovely whipped corner to the near post by Sparta centre back
Stevie Walker was met by Ross Ferguson to claim his second and Sparta's seventh
of the game. James Taylor then nearly scored the goal of the game when he hit
a great dipping volley from about 25 yards out but was disappointed to see his
effort hit the Motherwell woodwork. Number eight soon followed when Motherwell
failed to clear their lines and Kenny stroked the ball home to claim his first
goal for the Jags. Motherwell were beginning to argue between each other and
this wasn't helping matters, things were just not looking good for them as
Robert Stirling ran through the heart of the defence and unleashed an
unstoppable curling shot round the keeper to make it nine.
Motherwell looked down and out but managed to score what looked like a
consolation, Sparta were caught up the field when Motherwell counter attacked
and scored to make it 9-1. Ross Ferguson then completed his hat-trick when he
beat three Motherwell defenders and hit and unstoppable drive from the edge of
the area which landed in the top corner to his delight, he then added his
fourth when he waltzed into the area and slotted the ball past the helpless
keeper from 12 yards to make it 11-1.
Sparta made a few more tactical changes and the move off the match resulted in
Sparta's twelfth when good play from James Taylor and Robert Stirling down the
right was eventually finished off when James whipped in a cross into the danger
area between defender and goalkeeper where he found Robert who had continued
his run, to embarrass Motherwell even more. Motherwell had something to cheer
about as the match drew to a close when Sparta were caught sleeping, Motherwell
capitalised on the opportunity and made the score 12-2.
The referee then drew the match to a close to the delight of the two sets of
players, a good win for the Jags and they were back to winning ways.
