Sparta Jag vs KaisAYRslautern
Ibrox Community Complex, Glasgow
Ibrox was again the venue as Sparta looked to pick up their first league win of
2003, against an Ayr side looking for a similar result to the 5-3 victory they
had last time they came to Glasgow.
KaisAyr started the brighter of the two sides and had most of the possession in
the opening 20 minutes. Sparta had Nicky Sutherland to thank for some
excellent goalkeeping, which ensured the score sheet remained blank during this
period.
It was Sparta who opened the scoring though, with a first class goal. Paddy
Kelly played the ball between two Ayr defenders for Stevie Thomas to run onto.
He cut the ball back from the right hand side to leave Rab Stirling an easy tap
in for his 10th goal of the season.
This sparked Sparta into life and they almost doubled their lead before half
time when Charlie Kirkwood's header was cleared off the line. Marcos Aranda
then set up Rab Stirling, but his effort was well blocked by the keeper.
Sparta had the first real chance of the second half, when Craig McGuire's
25-yard effort was brilliantly saved.
KaisAyr could have equalised soon after. A corner was sent in from the left,
and Stevie Walker blocked the resultant header on the line.
Stevie was then involved as Sparta doubled their lead deep into the half. His
corner to the back post was headed goalwards by Charlie Kirkwood, with Rab
Stirling adding the slightest of touches before the ball finished up in the
back of the net.
Another good day at the office for Sparta, with a hardworking performance
reaping its rewards. Thanks as always to Pazza and KaisAyr for what is always
a competitive fixture.
