Sparta Jag vs UCS Bankies
Ibrox Community Complex, Glasgow
After the disappointment against Real Maroon the previous week, Sparta were
looking to get back to winning ways against the Bankies. Despite it being
Old Firm Sunday, Sparta had virtually a full squad of players to choose
from.
Within the first two minutes, Sparta almost took the lead. Paddy Kelly's
shot, however, was well saved by the Bankies keeper. Soon after, the Bankies
took the lead, when a well taken free kick was dispatched into the corner of
the net.
Sparta rallied and soon equalised when Stuart Deans scored his second of the
season. Sparta could have taken the lead soon after, but Charlie Kirkwood's
header rebounded off the post. It wasn't long before Sparta did take the
lead though, as a well taken double from Rab Stirling gave Sparta a 3-1
margin at the interval.
After the break, the Bankies had an excellent chance to reduce the deficit,
when another dangerous free kick was touched onto the crossbar by Nicky
Sutherland. Sparta themselves had a few excellent chances to extend their
lead, most notably through Stuart Deans, and Ruairidh Grenfell, but both
efforts were saved.
Sparta eventually added to their tally, when a high ball was played into the
box to Grenfell, and his first time effort was tucked away neatly into the
corner. The game then took an unfortunate twist when Jackie Derrick was sent
off for a headbutt. Despite being down to ten men, Sparta completed the
scoring after Rab Stirling rounded the keeper and cut the ball back for
Mark Donnelly to tap into the empty net.
Many thanks to all at the Bankies for helping to arrange the game at such
short notice.
