Sparta Jag vs Compaq
West of Scotland Science Park, Glasgow

Our first match after the winter break was a friendly against Compaq. They had made a change in the goalkeeping department since our 6-4 victory earlier in the season so it looked like being quite a tough match. For once we had plenty of players, so the only difficulty for the management team was making sure everybody got a game.

The visitors went ahead after about fifteen minutes, when the ball was prodded home from a goalmouth scramble. We drew level five minutes later with a fine strike from the edge of the box by Brian "Gio" McPherson. Almost immediately, a defensively slip gifted Compaq another goal, and within a minute, Raymond Collins had put us level again. It was around this time that substitute Jake Hansen became the unluckiest man on the park when he had to limp off with a hamstring injury without actually having kicked the ball. Compaq's keeper then made a fine save from Paddy Kelly, and on the stroke of half-time, Collins was unlucky to see his chip go just over the bar after having been put clean through.

Half time: Sparta Jag 2 Compaq 2

We had a good spell early in the second half. A few minutes in, a cross from Alan McIntyre found Raymond Collins but his header was just wide. Two minutes later, Paddy Kelly was pulled back in the box and Craig McIntosh dispatched the penalty, despite Compaq's keeper getting a hand to it. We could have gone further up on 54 minutes when Brian McPherson had a great chance to score but put the ball over the bar.

Compaq soon regained the lead, mostly against the run of play, when they scored two almost identical goals in the space of a minute. One of their players was allowed to run past a fairly statuesque Sparta Jag defence and knocked the ball past Nicky Sutherland. Paddy Kelly drew us level three minutes later after pouncing on a defensive error, and although from the touchline his shot seemed to go wide, it actually went through a hole in the net. With the game finely poised, the delayed kick-off came back to haunt us when another two teams appeared at the side of the pitch and the referee had no choice but to blow for full time, some 15 minutes early.
