IBM vs Sparta Jag
Battery Park, Gourock

After a frantic couple of hours trying to get hold of replacements for late call-offs, we got to Battery Park only to discover that the referee had contacted IBM to say he couldn't make it. Jake Hansen, who had not quite recovered from an ankle injury, volunteered himself for the position and a whistle was obtained from reception.

Sparta Jag took the lead after around 15 minutes, when Brian Gallagher ran across the edge of the box and turned to slot the ball past IBM's keeper. We soon doubled our lead when a penalty was awarded for handball, a decision which was hotly disputed. Adam Nelson chipped the ball over the keeper, who might have saved it had he chosen to stand still. Brian Gallagher soon added a third, running from just inside his own half to beat IBM's offside trap. Our opponents' best chance came when a long ball cleared the defence and left their striker with only our keeper to beat. Nicky Sutherland came outside his area to palm the chip away, and should certainly have been sent off, except IBM graciously allowed him to stay on the pitch. They might well have regretted this when he dived full-length to touch their free-kick round the post.

In the second half, Brian Gallagher continued where he had left off and slotted the ball past the keeper for his hat-trick. IBM appeared to be concentrating their resources in midfield and up front, and Brian was able to use his pace to outrun the defence. We were also controlling the midfield, with Scott Daly and Alan McIntyre involved in some neat passing moves. Craig McIntosh followed up in the penalty area to knock in our fifth, and the scoring was completed by Brian who took the ball past IBM's keeper and slotted it into the empty net, after a previous attempt to do that with a cheeky backheel had gone horribly wrong. Some last-ditch defending and a great save by Nicky Sutherland ensured we kept a second consecutive clean sheet.

During the second half, the onset of darkness made it difficult to see our opponents in their dark blue Man Utd away jerseys, even under the floodlights. However, on more than one occasion they passed the ball to the referee, who had already changed from a black to a light blue top because of the colour clash.
